Third Quarter Threes Lift Wilkes Women’s Basketball to Second Straight Conference Victory

Third Quarter Threes Lift Wilkes Women's Basketball to Second Straight Conference Victory

DOYLESTOWN, PA. – The Wilkes University Colonels women's basketball squad hit the road for their second straight Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) game, this time against the Delaware Valley Aggies.

The Colonels (8-10, 2-5 MACF) found themselves down heading into the locker rooms for halftime, but a 24-11 third quarter propelled them to a 66-57 victory over the Aggies (1-17, 0-7).

A 9-2 run in the middle of the first frame gave the Colonels an 18-12 lead in the last minutes, but the Aggies managed to cut the lead to 20-17 thanks to some sharp shooting beyond the arc heading into the second period.  The quarter was dictated by the Aggies, who outscored the Colonels 19-13 in the period, but the Colonels never trailed by more than five and found themselves down 36-33 heading into halftime.

The Colonels took command of the game in the third period, sinking five threes for 15 of their 24 points in the quarter.  Junior guard Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) scored 13 of the Colonel points in the electric quarter, which saw the Colonels go on an early 9-0 run and finish the quarter up 57-47.  The Colonels defense locked down the Aggie offense until the final seconds of the fourth, holding them to two points in the period until there was only 1:39 left on the clock.

Kelley had a strong night for the Colonels on offense, scoring 25 points in the victorious effort.  The total was good enough for her season-high and two points short of tying her career high   She just barely missed a double-double with nine rebounds on the night and also had a pair of blocks and a pair of steals.  Freshman guard Macy Berryman (Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mountain East) also hit double digit points with 10 of her own.   Freshman guard Brianna Horton (Verona, NJ/Verona) had eight rebounds

The Colonels look to continue their streak of conference victories as they return to the Marts Center this Saturday at noon.  They play host to Eastern, who toppled Wilkes in a 65-48 affair in St. Davids, Pa. on January 17th.
