Wilkes Women's Basketball Falls to FDU-Florham on Senior Day

WILKES-BARRE- The Wilkes University women's basketball team fell to FDU-Florham by a 71-55 final in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action at the Marts Center on Saturday afternoon. The contest was senior day for the four graduating seniors,
Alyssa Alfano (Dunmore, PA/Holy Cross),
Amber Grohowski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke),
Gianna Roberts (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke), and
Sierra Smith (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee), and was also the last game of the season for the Colonels.

FDU-Florham scored the first points of the game with an early three-pointer. Roberts would then score six straight points to give the Colonels an early 6-3 advantage. After a layup from the Devils, Roberts would drill a three-pointer to give her nine first quarter points. FDU-Florham finished the first quarter with a 4-0 run to give them a one-point advantage going into the second quarter with the score at 16-15.

The Devils opened up the second quarter with a 7-0 run to bring the score to 23-15 at the 8:00 mark. The Colonels would answer with a 5-0 run of their own, including a three-pointer from
Katelyn Kinczel (Highland Heights, OH/Mayfield) to bring Wilkes within three points of FDU-Florham. Wilkes would manage to keep the score close the remainder of the second quarter with the Devils leading 32-28 going into halftime.

FDU began the third quarter on an 8-2 run to bring the score to 40-30 at the 6:02 mark. The Colonels were unable to pull within close range of the Devils the remainder of the third quarter as FDU-Florham led by a score of 51-40 going into the fourth.

Wilkes was able to pull within seven points of the Devils at the 6:12 mark after a
Macy Berryman (Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mountain East) three-pointer. FDU-Florham would bring its lead back to double-digits after a three-pointer of their own at the 4:52 mark. The Devils would maintain a double-digit lead the remainder of the game and go on to win 71-55.

Roberts led all scorers with 22 points and added four rebounds. Berryman finished with 12 points and three boards, while
Brenna Babcock (Sweet Valley, PA/Northwest Area) contributed six points and three rebounds for the Colonels.

Cayla Staggers, Helen Ishmael, and Jayda Bing all finished in double figures for the Devils with 16, 13, and 11 points respectively. Staggers also finished with a game-high nine rebounds for FDU-Florham.

The Colonels finished the season at 9-16 overall and 3-11 in conference play.
