DeSales Beats Wilkes Women's Basketball

CENTER VALLEY, PA – Host DeSales University defeated the Wilkes University women's basketball team Saturday afternoon 90-34 in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) contest inside Billera Hall Gymnasium.

Wilkes fell to 2-8 in MAC Freedom games and 8-13 overall with the loss. DeSales, who is receiving votes in the D3hoops.com national poll, improved to 9-1 in the league and 17-4 overall.

The Bulldogs wasted no time as the hosts hit their first two shots from three-point range and opened the game on a 25-0 run. Alyssa Alfano (Dunmore, PA/Holy Cross) broke the drought for the Colonels with two free throws at the 1:48 mark on the first quarter and then hit from beyond the arc for the first made field goal of the day for Wilkes with 54 seconds left. DeSales led 27-5 at the close of the first quarter.

DeSales scored the first eight points of the second quarter before Vanessa Whitecavage (Shenandoah, PA/Marian Catholic) made a layup for Wilkes. Macy Berryman (Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mountain East) followed with a jumper and Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) a layup as the Colonels went on a 6-0 run. The Bulldogs then closed the quarter on a 13-5 run to take a 48-16 lead into halftime.

Wilkes had its best offensive quarter in the third with 15 points but DeSales widened its lead to 72-31 after 30 minutes on its way to a 90-34 win.

Berryman led Wilkes with nine points while Alfano added seven. Brianna Horton (Verona, NJ/Verona) led the Colonels with six rebounds. DeSales was led by five players in double-figures for scoring including Molly Jansco (17), Averi Jordan (15), Samantha Shinkus (13), Rylie Rittenhouse (13), and Emma Stanfield (11). Jansco and Jordan each had seven rebounds.

The Colonels continue their MAC Freedom slate on Wednesday, hosting Misericordia at the Marts Center with tip-off scheduled for 8:00 p.m. The Cougars lead the series 17-5 dating back to the 2008-09 season including a 74-41 win in Dallas, Pa. on January 8th.
