Wesley Ends Wilkes Softball Win Streak at Five
N. MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Wilkes University softball team saw its five-game winning streak come to a halt on Friday afternoon at the Snowbird Tournament after Wesley College took a 3-1 decision over the Colonels.
With the loss Wilkes dropped to 5-3 overall on the season while Wesley improved to 10-3 overall with the non-conference victory.
The Wolverines took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on two hits and one Colonels error. The second run for Wesley in the inning scored on a wild pitch. Wesley then added one run in the bottom of the fifth after a two-out walk came into score on a triple by the next batter.
The Colonels didn't go away quietly as they fought to their final out.
Sarah Gibson (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley) led off the top of the seventh with a single to right field. After the next two batters were retired,
Jessie Smith (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) and
Haley Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon) showed patience at the plate and each worked walks to load the bases.
Jordyn Kondras (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) then singled on a hard ground ball to the shortstop to pick up an RBI as pinch runner
Amaya Roane (Stafford, VA/Fredericksburg Christian School) scored from third. Wesley was then able to get the final out on a fly ball to right to hold on for the 3-1 win.
Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., PA/Hazleton) dropped to 0-2 on the season in the circle as the senior went all six innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Dori Loukopoulos picked up the complete game win for the Wolverines as she went seven innings allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Wilkes closes out its action in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. at 2:00 p.m. today against Waynesburg University.
