Wilkes Softball Completes Spring Break Trip at Pfeiffer
MISENHEIMER, NC – Host Pfeiffer University took both ends of a doubleheader against the Wilkes University softball team on Saturday as the Colonels completed their Spring Break Trip. The Falcons won game one 5-3 and game two 5-1.
Wilkes returns home after a 6-5 start to the season down south. Pfeiffer improved to 12-1 overall on the season with the pair of wins.
In game one the Colonels cracked the scoreboard first with a three-run top of the third.
Erin Cabry (York, PA/Central York) led off the inning with a home run down the leftfield line.
Caylee-Mae Williams (Yuba City, CA/River Valley) then walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Amaya Roane (Stafford, VA/Fredericksburg Christian School). Williams then scored with two outs on an error by the Falcons second baseman with
Britny Jumalon (Torrance, CA/Torrance) reaching base on the play.
Sarah Gibson (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley) then reached base and Jumalon moved to second on another error by the third baseman.
Rachel Pritchard (Wilmington, DE/Concord) then singled home Jumalon to make the score 3-0.
The Falcons got one run back in the bottom of the third and then scored two runs on three hits in the fourth to tie the game. Pfeiffer pushed ahead in the fifth inning with two runs on four hits for the 5-3 lead.
Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., PA/Hazleton) (0-3) went 4.2 innings allowing five runs on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts in the circle for Wilkes.
Sennie Viramontes (Anaheim, CA/Magnolia) and
Gracen Staunton (Kernersville, NC/Northwest Guilford) combined for the final 1.1 innings. Cabry led the way at the plate in game one with a 2-for-3 game.
The Falcons opened game two with three runs in the first two innings. The Colonels scored in the top of the third after Jumalon reached on an error. Gibson then walked and Pritchard doubled in Jumalon for the RBI.
Pfeiffer hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to up its lead to 5-1.
Staunton (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season, going 1.2 innings. She allowed three runs on three hits and six walks while striking out two. Pritchard pitched the final 4.1 innings allowing two runs on four hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Jumalon, Pritchard,
Jordyn Kondras (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) and
Jessie Smith (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) recorded one hit in game two. Gibson walked three times.
The Colonels will open home action on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Albright College at the Ralston Athletic Complex with first pitch of game one scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
