Arcadia Takes MAC Freedom Match from Wilkes Women's Volleyball

WILKES-BARRE – Visiting Arcadia University swept the Wilkes University women's volleyball team 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 27-25) in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) match Tuesday night at the Marts Center.

With the loss Wilkes fell to 1-6 in the conference and 10-17 overall while Arcadia improved to 5-3 in the league and 12-17 overall.

The Colonels were even with the Knights through the first 10 points of the opening set behind two kills from reigning MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Week Kelsey Carroll (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) and an ace by Alexa Cassel (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin). Arcadia then stormed out to a lead with an 8-1 run and the Colonels could not rebound as the Knights won set one 25-15.

Wilkes opened the second set up 5-2 as Nicole Fitzpatrick (Newhampton, NY/Minisink Valley) recorded a kill and Cassel another ace but the Knights would go on a 12-1 run to take a 14-6 lead and would cruise to a 25-10 set win from there.

The Colonels inserted fresh faces in the form of Jessica Salus (Shavertown, PA/Lake Lehman), Allison Murie (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), and Emily Gentzel (Yaphank, NY/Bellport) into the lineup for the third set which provided Wilkes a spark. The Navy and Gold opened up a 10-5 lead with kills coming from Carroll, Fitzpatirck, Salus, and Murie. After Arcadia closed within a point at 11-10 the Colonels scored five of the next six points to hold a 16-11 lead as Hope Ousey (Exton, PA/Henderson) had two kills. A kill by Salus off the Arcadia block gave Wilkes a 20-13 advantage. From there Arcadia went on an 8-3 run to close within 23-21. A Knights attack error gave Wilkes three set points but the visitors responded with three in a row and six of the next seven points to win the set 27-25 and the match 3-0.

Carroll led Wilkes with six kills while adding 10 digs. Cassel directed the offense with 16 assists and added 10 digs for her tenth double-double of the season. Ali Yordy (Fairfield, PA/Fairfield Area) led the Colonels with 15 digs and Fitzpatrick had three blocks.

Arcadia was led by Michelle Frank and Nicole Dallara with 12 kills while Estefania Martinez-Sola dished out 36 assists and had 10 digs. Frank added 12 digs and the Knights were led in the category by Grace Kraft's 25.

The Colonels will close out MAC Freedom play with a road match at Lycoming College on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Williamsport, Pa.
