Stevens Takes MAC Freedom Match over Wilkes Women's Volleyball

WILKES-BARRE – Conference leader Stevens Institute of Technology swept the Wilkes University women's volleyball team 3-0 (25-8, 25-17, 25-13) in a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) match Wednesday night at the Marts Center.

With the loss Wilkes fell to 8-11 overall and 1-3 in the conference while Stevens improved to 14-2 overall and remained unbeaten in the league at 5-0.

Sophomore middle hitter Nicole Fitzpatrick (Newhampton, NY/Minisink Valley) played a strong match as she collected six kills on seven attempts with only one hitting error for a .714 hitting percentage. Fitzpatrick added a match high four block assists.

The Ducks controlled the first set in large part due to a 10-point run. The Colonels led 5-1 following two service aces from Kelsey Carroll (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) in the second set. Wilkes battled with Stevens and following two Fitzpatrick kills and a block by Alexis Reedy (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra Area) and Fitzpatrick the Colonels trailed by only two points at 17-15. Stevens would score eight of the next 10 points to win the set. A close third set nearing the midpoint turned in the Ducks favor with runs of three, five, and four points.

Reedy tied for the team lead with six kills while not committing an error on 14 attacks for a .429 hitting percentage. She added four digs to finish second on the team. Alexa Cassel (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) directed the Colonels offense with 11 assists. Ali Yordy (Fairfield, PA/Fairfield Area) led the way with 10 digs.

Parker Adkins with 11 kills and Cleo Shannon with 10 led the Ducks attack. Kathleen Riegner and Enkhsanaa Enkhbayar had 21 and 19 assists respectively. Elizabeth Chu contributed 15 digs.

Wilkes held the edge in team blocks with a 4-3 advantage.

The Colonels will take to the road for a tri-match in Chester, Pa. on Saturday. Wilkes will play the hosts Widener University at 12:00 p.m. before ending the day with Salisbury University at 2:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
