Shooting Struggles Doom Wilkes Women's Basketball against Widener
 
WILKES-BARRE – A 23.6 percent (13-55) shooting percentage were the story as the Wilkes University women's basketball team fell to Widener University by a 65-42 final inside the Marts Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Colonels fell to 1-1 with the defeat.
 
Widener opened the contest on a 6-3 run through the first two-plus minutes before a Katelyn Kinczel (Highland Heights, OH/Mayfield) jumper brought Wilkes to within 6-5 with 7:11 on the first-quarter clock.
 
The Colonels grabbed the lead at 13-10 with 3:12 left in the first after layups from Erin Shober (Reading, PA/Wilson) and Julia Marino (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Township).
 
The Pride finished the quarter on a 10-3 run, holding a 20-16 advantage after 10 minutes of play.
 
Widener began the second quarter on a 4-0 run to grad a 24-16 lead with 8:24 remaining until halftime. Wilkes cut the lead to four, but the Pride pushed its lead up to as many as 11 before exiting the first half with the Colonels trailing 33-26.
 
Widener took control of play in the second half, outscoring Wilkes 32-16 as the Colonels shot 16.7 percent (2-12) in the third quarter and 25 percent (3-12) in the fourth.
 
Kinczel led all scorers finishing with a game-high 13 points to go with three rebounds and two steals. Marino added eight points, four rebounds, and two assists.
 
Brooke Bachtle paced the Pride, finishing with 12 points and seven rebounds while Nicole Barnes contributed four points and eight rebounds.
 
Wilkes returns to the hardwood on Tuesday when they travel to Neumann University for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game.
