Late Surge Falls Short as Wilkes Wrestling Drops 25-21 Decision to Alvernia

WILKES-BARRE – Visiting Alvernia University used four extra-point victories including three falls and held on despite a late Wilkes University rally to take a 25-21 win over the Colonels Friday night at the Marts Center.

At 125-pounds, Austin Fashouer (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) used an escape and a late takedown in the first period to take a 3-2 lead after one. An escape to start the second period put the Colonel rookie ahead 4-2 heading into the final frame. Fashouer then rode out the final two minutes taking riding time on way to the 5-2 decision win.

Alvernia used a major decision at 133-pounds to take its first lead of the match as Kyle Seibert bested Nicholas Bauer (Coplay, PA/Wyoming Seminary).

Wilkes' Collin Rolak (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township) used a takedown late in the first period to take a 2-0 lead at 141-pounds over Alvernia's Quinn Tobin. Tobin rallied in the second frame using a near fall one minute in before pinning Rolak at 4:46 as the Golden Wolves extended their lead to 10-3 after three bouts.

At 149-pounds Alvernia continued to build on its lead as Jason Rezac earned a fall in 4:32 over Max Shaffer (Doylestown, PA/Archbishop Wood) pushing the advantage to 16-3.

Alvernia continued its point streak at 157-pounds as Robert Lawlor earned a 5-1 decision win over Wilkes' Allen Kokilananda (Springfield, VA/Annandale) taking a 19-3 lead into the final five bouts of the match.

At 165-pounds (No. 8/NWCA) Matt Lackman recorded Alvernia's third fall of the match when he pinned Charles Everdale (Freeland, PA/Hazleton Area) in 2:09 as the Golden Wolves continued to lead 25-3.

John Devito (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) put Wilkes back on the board with an 11-2 major decision win over Gavin Hollingsworth at 174-pounds cutting into the Alvernia lead at 25-7.

Wilkes continued to fight back in the team score as (No. 13/NWCA) Colton Babcock (Sweet Valley, PA/Northwest Area) pinned Isaac Kassis in 3:59 as the Colonels trailed 25-13 with two bouts remaining.

At 197-pounds Cameron Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) kept the Colonels alive in the match with the squads second straight fall in 3:12 but lost one team point on an unsportsmanlike penalty following the win. Alvernia continued to lead 25-18 heading into the final heavyweight bout.

Sean McCurdy (Philadelphia, PA/Academy of the New Church) then finished off the Wilkes scoring with a hard-fought 3-1 decision win at 285-pounds using a late takedown in the third period to seal the win.

Wilkes is back on the mat on December 22 hosting the Wilkes Invitational at 9:00 a.m. at the Marts Center.
