Wilkes Women's Basketball Drops Road Matchup at Gwynedd Mercy
GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – The Wilkes University women's basketball squad wrapped up the 2021 portion of their schedule with a road trip to face the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins Saturday afternoon.
The Colonels (4-7) struggled to muster much of anything against the Griffins (6-5) and fell 89-76 to head into the holiday break. The Navy and Gold would never lead outside of the opening minute of play and found themselves behind 20-13 heading into the second quarter. Neither team would do much to change the differential as they went into the locker room with the Griffins up 40-31, but an 11-5 run by Gwynedd Mercy late in the third quarter would push them ahead 65-49.
Senior guard
Katelyn Kinczel (Highland Heights, OH/Mayfield) finished with a team-leading 20 points, while junior guard
Brianna Horton (Verona, NJ/Verona) had 14 rebounds. Four Griffins finished with double digit points, with Cayla Sharkey finishing with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Hayley Crossley added in a double-double as well, with 18 points and 13 rebounds to her name.
The Colonels wrap up their five-game road swing in January with a trip out to Galloway, N.J. to face Stockton University. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on January 3 in a rematch of a 2019 matchup where the Colonels fell 59-49 at the Marts Center.
