Wilkes Men's Basketball Opens Franklin & Marshall Tournament with Loss to Wesleyan
LANCASTER, PA. – The Wilkes University Colonels played their first of two games in the Sponaugle New Years Tournament hosted by Franklin & Marshall College Wednesday evening against the Wesleyan University Cardinals. The Cardinals were receiving votes in the latest d3hoops.com poll.
The Colonels (3-7) fell behind the Cardinals (10-1) as Wesleyan shot 61.8% from the field on route to a 108-87 victory.
A 14-0 run in the middle of the first half with the Colonels trailing only 23-20 put the game firmly in Cardinal hands. Wesleyan would build their lead up to 67-42 heading into the locker room and kept the Colonels at a comfortable distance for the remainder of the game.
Trent Fisher (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) led the Colonels with 19 points and six rebounds.
Drake Marshall (Gainesville, VA/Patriot) followed with 14 points, four rebounds, and five assists.
Michael Rickert (Moosic, PA/Riverside) scored a career high 14 points as he shot 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Matthew Davidheiser (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) added 13 points and
Joey Zvorsky (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) recorded a career best 12 points to round out the double figure scorers for Wilkes.
Sean Coller (Hershey, PA/Hershey) dished out a career high five assists.
Preston Maccoux and Sam Peek each scored 23 points to lead Wesleyan. Nicky Johnson added 19 points and Gabe Ravetz tacked on 13 points.
The Colonels will wait and see who their opponent is for the conclusion of the Franklin & Marshall Tournament. They will play either Franklin & Marshall or Alfred at 1:00 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
