Wilkes Men's Swimming Places Fourth at Cougar Splash Invitational

DALLAS, PA – The Wilkes University men's swimming team placed fourth of six teams at the Cougar Splash Invitational hosted by Misericordia University following the final two sessions on Saturday. Wilkes earned 210 team points throughout the two-day event.

The team of Christian Mavus (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke), Daniel Micozzi (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst), Chris Gowarty (Scranton, PA/West Scranton), and Mason Thrush (Carlisle, PA/Big Spring) earned 14 points to open Session 2 during the morning in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 2:01.73.

Shane Miller (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) was ninth of 15 swimmers to earn four points in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:01.78. Micozzi was ninth and Mavus tenth to earn three and two points respectively in the same race.

Jared Weyandt (Reading, PA/Exeter Township Senior) had a strong swim in the 200 Freestyle as he placed fourth of 14 swimmers with a time of 1:55.29 to garner 11 points. Liam White (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) earned Wilkes seven points as he came in seventh. Keith Nissen (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) was eighth to bring in five points and Thrush was tenth to score three more points in the 200 Free.

Stephen Verosko (Gainesville, VA/Patriot) earned three points in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:07.87.

In the 800 Freestyle Relay to end the morning session Miller, Verosko, Weyandt, and White went 8:15.50 to place fourth of six teams and earn 22 points. The team of Micozzi, Thrush, Nissen, and Mavus earned 18 additional points in the event.

Wilkes was fourth of six teams after Session 2 with 151 team points.

Nissen scored the first Colonels points in Session three during the evening with four points in the 100 Freestyle. He placed ninth of 19 swimmers with a time of 53.45.

Weyandt and White scored nine and five points during the 200 Breaststroke. Miller tallied nine points in the 200 Butterfly.

The team of Verosko, Micozzi, Nissen, and Weyandt placed sixth of eight teams to close the evening in the 400 Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:34.83 to score 18 points. White, Thrush, Mavus, and Miller were seventh with a 3:44.08 to earn 14 more points.

York College of Pennsylvania won the team event with 622 points.

The Colonels will remain idle through the New Year before returning to action on Saturday, January 15 for a dual meet at Misericordia.
