Wilkes Men's Basketball Falls in Home Opener to DeSales
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University Colonels hosted the second part of their season-opening home and away doubleheader against the DeSales Bulldogs Friday night. The Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) matchup was the first home game of the Colonels season.
The Colonels (0-2, 0-2 MACF) hung around the Bulldogs (2-0, 2-0) who pulled away in the end to sweep the doubleheader with a 77-43 affair.
The Bulldogs raced out to a 11-1 lead early in the first half, before the Colonels cut it down to single digits with a 6-0 run of their own. Junior guard
Drake Marshall (Gainesville, VA/Patriot) headlined the run with a three-pointer. DeSales built up a 13-point advantage with just over seven minutes in the frame, and maintained it to carry a 35-22 lead into halftime.
The two teams battled back and forth in the first half of the second period, with the Colonels failing to eat into the Bulldogs advantage. A 10-0 Bulldogs run after the halfway point of the frame effectively put away the Colonels. DeSales continued to build their lead for the remainder of the half, finishing with a 34-point advantage in the second matchup between the two squads.
Marshall led all Colonels with 12 points on the evening, while tacking on a block and a pair of steals. Freshman forward
Trent Fisher (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) earned nine points and tied for the team lead in rebounds (five) in his first game at the Marts Center. Junior guard
Sean Coller (Hershey, PA/Hershey) lead the Navy and Gold in steals with three, and also added on seven points.
Timmy Edwards led DeSales in points (20) and rebounds (13) to earn himself a double-double in the affair.
