Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Power Play Fuels Overtime Comeback Victory against Chatham on Senior Night
WILKES-BARRE – The Colonels welcomed the Chatham Cougars to the Toyota SportsPlex Saturday night for a Senior Night showdown with United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) playoff implications.
The Colonels (6-3, 6-3) fell behind early in the third period after a sluggish start to the game, but roared to life late with the power play in the third period and overtime to slip past the Cougars (5-7, 5-5) with a 4-3 victory.
The teams traded a goal each in the first period, with the Cougars striking first at 8:09. Junior forward
Tyler Dill (South Lake Tahoe, CA) replied with a tying goal at 14:36 in the period with assists from fellow junior forward
Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/Saint Anthony's) and sophomore defender
Toon De Schepper (Nieuwenrode, Belgium). The horns went quiet for the second period, with the Cougars out-shooting the Colonels 13-8.
The Cougars put the Colonels in a tough spot with two early third period goals at 1:04 and 5:44 respectively. The Navy and Gold struggled to find a response until they found themselves on the power play. Junior forward
Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ) only needed five seconds in a power play to score at 10:47, with help from Barrow and junior forward
Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ).
Barrow found the net only 24 seconds into a power play at 14:21 to tie the game up in regulation, with Dill and junior defender
Michael Gurska (Revere, MA) providing assists. The two teams stalemated through the rest of the third period, and neither side were able to find the net in a 3-on-3 overtime until the Colonels found another power play opportunity late. Barrow found the net 4:20.1 into the extra period with Gurska and Flynn assisting to send the Colonels home with a victory and a home game in the UCHC playoff quarterfinals.
Barrow scored or assisted on all four Colonels goals on the evening. Gurska recorded three blocked shots on top of his two assists. Dill had six shots on goal, while Flynn and senior defender Ryan Soloman had five shots each.
Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY) took home the victory with 29 saves, while Ricardo Gonzalez had an impressive game in goal for Chatham, allowing only a single non-power play goal with 35 saves.
The Colonels are set to host a UCHC quarterfinal game at the Toyota SportsPlex Wednesday evening. The opponent and start time are yet to be determined as the Colonels continue their 2020-21 season into the conference playoffs.
