Even-Numbered Quarter Deficit Too Much for Women's Basketball against Delaware Valley
WILKES-BARRE – Being outscored by a combined 41-25 in the second and fourth quarter proved to be the difference as the Wilkes University women's basketball team fell to Delaware Valley University by a 57-47 final in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action from the Marts Center on Friday evening.
The Colonels fell to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in MAC Freedom play while the Aggies improved to 2-4 overall, 2-2 in conference.
The game got off to a slow start offensively as Wilkes led 8-5 after the first quarter.
Neither team was able to jump out to a lead until the end of the second quarter as the Aggies finished the half on a 7-2 run to enter the break leading 28-23.
Wilkes began the third quarter on a 5-0 run on a three-pointer from Katelyn Kinczel (Highland Heights, OH/Mayfield) and two free throws from Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) to tie the score at 28. Delaware Valley retook the advantage at 37-33 with 2:22 on the clock but the Colonels responded to end the quarter trailing 39-37.
Wilkes cut the deficit to one at 45-44 and 5:41 left in the game, but the Aggies finished the contest on a 12-3 run to put the game away.
Kelley finished with a team-high 13 points and four rebounds. Kinczel and Julia Marino (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Township) added eight points each.
Emily Kutskel led Delaware Valley with a game-high 29 points and nine rebounds. Lauren Moretti added nine points and three rebounds.
Wilkes returns to the court on Monday when it welcomes Alvernia University to the Marts Center for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game.
