Power Play Barrage, Barrow Hat Trick Lifts Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Past Nazareth
ROCHESTER, NY – The Wilkes University Colonels men's ice hockey squad traveled to the Nazareth Golden Flyers Friday night. The Navy and Gold were looking to snap a two-game skid against their United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) rivals.
A trio of goals from junior forward
Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY) and a three-goal third period lifted the Colonels (2-2, 2-2 UCHC) past the Golden Flyers (0-3, 0-3) in a 6-3 victory.
The Golden Flyers struck first 11:51 into the game, but the Colonels answered back with a pair of Barrow goals at 12:46 and 16:53. The first was assisted by junior forwards
Tyler Dill (South Lake Tahoe, CA) and
Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ), the second by junior forwards
Devon Schell (Scarsdale, NY) and
Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ).
Nazareth replied with a tying goal in the second period, before Barrow completed his hat trick with a goal at 10:47, assisted by junior defender
Michael Gurska (Revere, MA). Nazareth tied it at 17:30 to send the two teams tied up at 3 apiece into the third period. Flynn quickly notched the game-winning goal 2:25 into the final frame with assists from Fea and Dill. The Colonels would add on two more power play goals afterwards to finish the scoring for the night. The first was scored by Schell at 11:04 with assists from junior forward
Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI) and junior defender
Dylan Kuipers (Andover, NJ). Kuipers put the final touch on the night at 13:09 with help from sophomore defender
Toon De Schepper (Nieuwenrode, Belgium) and sophomore forward
Billy Berry (Redding, CT).
Sophomore goaltender
Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY) earned the win with 29 saves on 32 shots. Barrow scored his three goals off of 12 shots to lead the Colonels in both categories, while Fea and Dill had two assists each. The Colonels out-shot the Golden Flyers 43 to 32, and punched home four of their seven power play opportunities.
The Colonels take on Nazareth at the Toyota SportsPlex tomorrow night. Puck will drop at 5:00 p.m. as the Navy and Gold look to take the season series against the Golden Flyers.
