Wilkes Baseball Earns Regular Season Sweep Against King's

WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Wilkes University Colonels traveled crosstown to face down the King's Monarchs to finish their season series on the road against their Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom rivals.

The Colonels (11-9) earned a season sweep against the Monarchs (4-10) with a 5-2 victory in game one and a 6-3 victory in the final game between the two in the regular season.

The Colonels sent out sophomore pitcher Jack Gordon (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) to the mound for game one.  Gordon allowed two runs in the first inning, but shut down the King's through the next four innings he pitched.  The Colonels bats took advantage of this, tying up the game with RBI singles from senior Bryan Nifenecker (Amityville, NY/St. Dominic) and senior Michael Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) in the second inning.

Senior Brandon Reno (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area) hit a sac fly in the third to take the lead for the Colonels, while senior Matt Reinert (Telford, PA/Souderton) added an insurance run in the inning with a single to left.  Nifenecker added in another RBI single in the fifth to make it 5-2, while sophomore pitcher Jonathan Martens (Mt. Pocono, PA/Scranton Prep) and senior pitcher Andrew Indzonka (New Windsor, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) closed out the game for the Colonels, with Indzonka earning a save for the effort.

Junior Gage Coudriet (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) made the start at pitcher in game two for the Colonels.  King's struck first again in the second inning with a solo home run, but Coudriet shut the Monarchs bats down until the end of the seventh.  The Colonels bats sprung to life to take advantage in the fourth inning.  Senior Jonah Harder (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) tied it with a bases-clearing RBI single to give the Colonels a 3-1 lead.  Senior Vinny Bobbin (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) tacked on an RBI double, before a Patrizio sacrifice fly made it 5-1 Colonels.  Senior Dominick Bayo (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) finished the rally in the fourth with a RBI single to make it 6-1.

The fifth and sixth innings went by without either team finding offense, but the Monarch's took advantage of a fielding error by the Colonels to cut the lead to 6-3 in the seventh.  Sophomore Sawyer Kemp (Nescopeck, PA/Berwick) took up pitching duties in the seventh and threw three strikeouts before Indzonka took up pitching duties in the bottom of the ninth.  He only needed three batters and a strikeout to take his second save of the day for the second Colonels victory.

With his two saves, Indzonka hit 17 saves for his career to break the saves record for the Colonels.  Harder went 3-for-3 in game two, accounting for two RBIs and a run.  Senior Nick Malatesta (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) hit 4-for-7 between both games and earned three runs on the day.

The Colonels look to continue their eight-game winning streak as they travel to Center Valley, Pa. to face DeSales in a doubleheader this Saturday.  First pitch is scheduled for noon as the Colonels prepare for the first of four games against the top team in the MAC Freedom in the end stretch of the regular season.
