Wilkes Softball Takes Season Series Victory at Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – After splitting a pair of games at the Ralston Athletic Complex, the Wilkes University Colonels traveled to face the Lycoming Warriors on the road Sunday afternoon for another doubleheader against their Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foes.

The Colonels (5-15, 5-11) came from behind in the first game against the Warriors (10-10, 9-7) in a 4-2 result, before a big fourth inning pushed the Navy and Gold past their MAC Freedom rival in game two 9-4.

Junior AJ Bryfogle (Easton, PA/Easton Area) took up starting duties for the Colonels in game one and threw two scoreless innings as neither team found runs until the fifth inning.  The Colonels struck first, with senior Haley Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon) singling to left field to give the Colonels the first run of the game.  Lycoming struck in the bottom of the frame with a double to left center, before walking in a run with the bases loaded in the sixth.

First year Hope Mullins (Midland, VA/Liberty) settled down to pitch out of the inning, and Lycoming wouldn't find another run for the rest of game one.  The Colonels broke through with a bases-clearing double by junior Emma Stauffer (Media, PA/Penncrest) to take a 4-2 edge, before junior Rhia Aurand (Avondale, PA/Avon Grove) took the last two outs of the seventh inning to seal the game for the Colonels.

Aurand started the second game for the Colonels.  The Warriors scored three in the first inning before the junior settled down, allowing only one run for the rest of her complete game start.  The Colonels notched their first run thanks to first year Carly Fogleman's (Reading, PA/Schuylkill Valley) single in the second inning.  The Colonels broke the game wide open in a six-run fourth inning, with junior Caylee-Mae Williams (Yuba City, CA/River Valley) starting the run with a single to right.  A fielding error by the Warriors brought home another run for the Navy and Gold, followed by first year Nicole O'Rourke (Staten Island, NY/Susan E Wagner) walking with the bases loaded to take the lead for the Colonels at 4-3.

Senior Sarah Gibson (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley) cleared the loaded bases with a double to right to make the score 7-3 after four and to put the game out of reach for the Colonels.  Aurand tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth with a double to left center to conclude the scoring for the Colonels in a 9-4 victory.

Mullins and Aurand each earned a victory in the 2-0 day for the Colonels.  Aurand threw four strikeouts in 7.2 innings pitched and tacked on a pair of RBIs in game two, while Mullins also had three strikeouts in her game one victory.  Stauffer and Gibson each had three RBIs on the day.  Williams hit 4-for-9 on the day, with three runs and an RBI to her name.  Boyd hit 4-for-6 and also had three runs and an RBI between both contests.

The Colonels have concluded their regular season slate as currently scheduled and wait to see who they will play in the MAC Freedom postseason tournament.  The quarterfinal is set to take place on May 1st and May 2nd, time and place to be determined.
