Wilkes Men's Swimming Places 11th at 2021 MAC Virtual Championships

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's swimming team placed 11th of 14 teams at the 2021 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Virtual Swimming Championships. The Colonels earned 349 team points during the 18 events that they swam Friday and Saturday at the Wyoming Valley CYC.

After the times were combined with the results from the other 13 teams competing in the conference championship event, the full results were established in the virtual format for this season. Liam White (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas High School) scored the most individual points for Wilkes with 24.

White earned 17 of his points in the 400 IM with a time of 5:09.73. He also added seven points in the 200 Butterfly with an 18th place finish and a time of 2:28.05.

Justin Burda (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) earned 12 points with a 15th place finish in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:17.63. He placed 19th of 26 swimmers in the 100 Butterfly to earn six points with a time of 57.90.

Shane Miller (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) was 16th in the 200 Butterfly to accumulate 11 points with a finishing time of 2:18.26.

Daniel Micozzi (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) placed 19th out of 24 swimmers in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:38.42 to earn six points. He earned two points in the 200 IM with a time of 2:20.54.

Stephen Verosko (Gainesville, VA/Patriot) tallied five points with a 20th place effort in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:00.98. He earned two points in the 500 Freestyle, placing 23rd in the 32 swimmer field with a time of 5:30.54.

Keith Nissen (Bloomsburg, PA/Central Columbia) finished in 21st out of 59 participants in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 23.12 to earn the Colonels four points.

Nick Martino (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) placed 22nd in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:03.03 to earn three points.

In the five relay events, Wilkes totaled 274 points.

The team of Micozzi, Nissen, Verosko, and Martino earned 38 team points, placing 11th of 13 "A" relay teams in the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:36.13. Daniel Mack (Hanover, PA/New Oxford), Cameron Aspey (Dover, PA/Dover Area), Mason Thrush (Carlisle, PA/Big Spring), and Burda were seventh of eight "B" teams with a 1:41.87 to earn 18 more points.

In the 400 Medley Relay the "A" team of Martino, Jared Weyandt (Reading, PA/Exeter Township Senior), Burda, and Nissen placed 12th to earn 36 points with a time of 4:07.51. Coming in ninth of the "B" teams was Mack, Aspey, Miller, and Thrush as they earned 12 points with a time of 4:22.25.

Martino, Weyandt, Burda, and Nissen placed 10th of 12 "A" teams in the 200 Medley Relay to garner 40 points with a total time of 1:48.97. Mack, Micozzi, Miller, and Verosko were seventh of the "B" teams to earn 18 points with a time of 1:52.52.

Burda, Micozzi, Miller, and Verosko earned 36 team points, placing 12th of the "A" teams in the 800 Freestyle Relay with a time of 8:28.40. Mack, Thrush, Weyandt, and Liam White (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas High School) placed fourth of the "B" teams, edging their teammates' time with an 8:26.31 to add 22 points.

Martino, Verosko, Weyandt, and Nissen were 11th of the "A" teams to earn 38 points in the 400 Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:36.46. Micozzi, Thrush, White, and Miller placed seventh of the "B" teams with a 3:47.74 to gain 16 additional points.

Stevens Institute of Technology won the team championship with 1,099.5 points. York College of Pennsylvania placed second with 1,002 points and Albright College was third with 846 points.

Kurt von Autenried of Stevens won the MAC Swimmer of the Year Award while Devin Metzger of Albright won the Rookie of the Year Award. Paul Hughes of Stevens was named the Coach of the Year.
