Wilkes Baseball Scores in Bunches to Sweep FDU-Florham
 
TEANECK, N.J. – Wilkes baseball used the big inning to work its way to a Saturday sweep, defeating Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham by scores of 18-7 and 13-4 on the campus of FDU-Teaneck in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action. The Colonels completed a full four-game sweep when coupled with yesterday's two wins.
 
Wilkes improved to 7-9 overall and in conference while FDU now stands at 3-13.
 
The Colonels got on the board in the top of the first when Dominick Bayo (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) walked with one out and was followed by a homer from Nick Pronti (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Wood-Ridge).
 
Wilkes doubled its lead to 4-0 in the top of the third when Matt Reinert (Telford, PA/Souderton) led off with a walk, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on a triple off the bat of Michael Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery). Patrizio followed Reinert home on a single to center from Bayo.
 
FDU-Florham tied the score with four runs in the bottom of the third.
 
In the top of the fourth, Stone Wormuth (Carbondale, PA/Carbondale) led off with a single to left and came in to score on a triple down the right field line by Brandon Reno (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area), who scored on a sacrifice fly from Bryan Nifenecker (Amityville, NY/St. Dominic). After Reinert walked and Patrizio singled, Bayo brought home Reinert on a single to center to give the Colonels a 7-4 lead.
 
The Devils cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the fourth and tied the score at 7 in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Wilkes exploded for five two-out runs in the sixth. Patrizio started with a one out single and stole second. After a groundout, Pronti singled to score Patrizio and advanced to second when Darren Kerdesky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) was hit by a pitch. Nick Malatesta (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg) followed with a two-run double to left bringing home Pronti and Kerdesky, followed by a triple from Wormuth scoring Malatesta. Wormuth came in to score on an error by the centerfielder off the bat of Reno.
 
In the top of the seventh, Patrizio earned a one-out walk and advanced to second on an error by the first baseman. Bayo brought Patrizio home with an RBI double, followed by an RBI double from Pronti bringing home Bayo. Kerdesky the hit an RBI double scoring Pronti, and Malatesta finished the double streak bringing home Kerdesky. Not to be outdone, Wormuth homered bringing in Malatesta to finish the scoring.
 
Jonathan Martens (Mt. Pocono, PA/Scranton Prep) earned the win, pitching the final 3.1 innings allowing one run on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Jack Gordon (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) pitched the initial 2.2 innings surrendering four runs (one earned) on two hits with six walks and two strikeouts. Charles Giacometti Jr. (Dallas, PA/Dallas) allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit with three walks.
 
Pronti led Wilkes at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with four rbi's and three runs scored. Wormuth went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three rbi's, Bayo was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three rbi's and Patrizio finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one rbi.
 
In game two, Kerdesky led off the top of the second getting hit by a pitch and stealing second before coming in to score on a single to right by Reno.
 
The Colonels doubled their lead with a run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Pronti scoring Patrizio, who led off with a walk, stole second, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bayo.
 
FDU-Florham cut the lead to one with a run in the bottom of the third and tied the score with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
 
Wilkes retook the lead in the top of the fifth when Vinny Bobbin (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) led off with a walk, moved to second on a bunt single from Patrizio with both runners moving up a base when Bayo laid down a sacrifice bunt. After a fly out, Kerdesky doubled to left scoring Patrizio and Bobbin, with Kerdesky scoring on a single from Malatesta to make the score 5-2.
 
The Devils again cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs on three hits to make the score 5-4.
 
The Colonels hung seven runs in the top of the sixth, all with two outs. After starting the inning with back-to-back pop outs, Bobbin walked and came in to score on a triple by Patrizio. Bayo reached on an error scoring Patrizio and promptly stole second. Pronti brought home Bayo with a single to center and proceeded to steal second. Kerdesky followed with a walk while Malatesta loaded the bases with a single. Wormuth hit a two-run single scoring Pronti and Kerdesky followed by a two-run double from Reno scoring Malatesta and Wormuth, making the score 12-4.
 
Wilkes added its final run in the top of the ninth when Rob Iacono (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) led off with a triple and came into score on a groundout from Jack Hines (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne).
 
Gage Coudriet (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) earned the victory, allowing four runs on eight hits over five innings with three walks and one strikeout. Sawyer Kemp (Nescopeck, PA/Berwick) earned the save, pitching a scoreless final four frames with two hits, one walk, and two strikeouts.
 
Patrizio finished 3-for-4 at the plate in game two with three runs scored and one rbi. Reno went 2-for-4 with three rbi's while Malatesta was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one rbi.
 
The Colonels return to the diamond on Saturday when they will host King's College for a doubleheader at Bruggeworth Field starting at 12:00 p.m.
