Wilkes Men's Lacrosse Season Ends to Misericordia Barrage in MAC Freedom Playoffs
DALLAS, PA – The Wilkes University Colonels men's lacrosse squad traveled to face the Misericordia Cougars in the second time in as many weeks.
The sixth seeded Colonels (4-9, 3-5 MACF) took an early advantage over the host number three Cougars (9-3, 5-2), but fell in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom quarterfinal matchup 28-13 after a second period barrage.
Junior
Ethan Weaver (Olney, MD/James Hubert Blake) struck first at 14:49 with an assist from first-year
Colby Opromolla (Patterson, NY/Carmel), but the Cougars would go on to score the next five goals to go up 5-1 at the 12:16 mark. The Navy and Gold answered by scoring five of the next six goals to tie the game at six all. Senior
Nico Lorenzo (Howell, NJ/Howell) scored three of the five, while sophomore
Jacob Kudysch (Stratford, CT/Frank Scott Bunnell) and junior
Gavin Scofield (Stratford, CT/Stratford) had one apiece. Senior
Jamison Shaw (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) assisted on one of Lorenzo's goals at the 15:46 mark.
Opromolla would put the Colonels up 8-6 with goals at 4:33 and :07 in the first period, with senior
Luke Palladino (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) assisting on the first of the two goals. Misericordia would score nine unanswered in the second period, before Lorenzo broke the streak with a goal at 12:43 of the third. Misericordia would extend the lead to 23-11 before the third period was out to put the game effectively out of reach for the Colonels.
Lorenzo led the Colonels with five goals and five points on the evening. Opromolla and Weaver each posted three points, with Weaver adding in six ground balls. Shaw led the Colonels with 10 ground balls. Junior goalkeepers
Daniel Cox (Stratford, CT/Stratford) and
Ryan Lasher (Warrenton, VA/Liberty) combined for 21 saves on the evening.
Patrick Luzzi led all Cougars with eight goals and 17 shots on goal. Carson Venis and Kyle Vandenberg each had six points, while Garrett Heidecker had nine ground balls.
The Colonels have concluded their 2021 men's lacrosse season with the loss in the MAC Freedom quarterfinals.
