Wilkes Women's Tennis Advances to MAC Freedom Championship with 5-1 win Over Misericordia
EDWARDSVILLE – The #1 seed Wilkes University women's tennis team is headed back to the MAC Freedom Championship match after posting a 5-1 victory over #4 seed Misericordia University Thursday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
Wilkes remained perfect at 12-0 overall on the season following the postseason win. Misericordia saw its season end at 5-4.
In doubles play, the duo of
Cassidy Greenman (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) and
Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) took its match 8-1 over Megan Rembish and Lauren Visalli to give Wilkes a 1-0 lead.
Sarah Malone (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock) and
Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) posted an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles to push the advantage to 2-0. Misericordia answered back at No. 1 doubles as
Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) and
Zoe Klein (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) pushed Brianna Pizzano and Emily Brecker to the brink eventually losing 8-7 and 7-3 in the tiebreaker in a match that took over an hour and twenty minutes to complete.
Klein made quick work of Cassandra Benderavich at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-1 as Wilkes led 3-1. After a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 by Cieri, Malone clinched the match at No. 4 winning 6-1, 6-3 to send the Colonels to the title match.
The Colonels, the 13-time defending MAC Freedom champions, will be making their 14
th consecutive strip to the conference final on Saturday to take on the winner of #3 DeSales and #2 Stevens at the Ralston Athletic Complex at a time to be announced.
