Wilkes Women's Volleyball Sweeps Keystone
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team put together a strong performance on the Marts Center court to defeat visiting Keystone College 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-10) in non-conference action Thursday night.
The victory moved Wilkes to 6-6 overall while Keystone fell to 1-8.
The Colonels hit .241 as a team with
Hope Ousey (Exton, PA/Henderson) leading the way with eight kills.
Alexis Reedy (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra Area) and
Kelsey Carroll (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) followed with seven kills and
Emily Lass (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) added a season high of five.
Wilkes gained its first lead of the opening set on an Ousey kill to make the score 3-2. A four-point run, that included kills by
Nicole Fitzpatrick (Newhampton, NY/Minisink Valley) and Ousey, extended the lead to 10-4. From there the Colonels never looked back as they eventually won 25-12.
The Colonels opened the second set by scoring the first four points and then rallied to a 15-3 lead. The two sides traded small runs the rest of the way as Wilkes went ahead 2-0 in the match with a 25-13 victory.
A six-point run early in the third set put Wilkes ahead 7-2. In the run,
Jaclyn Rawa (West Chester, PA/Henderson) had a service ace and Carroll, Ousey, and
Laura Booths (Lake Ariel, PA/Western Wayne) each collected a kill. A five and a six point rally later in the set pushed the Colonels lead to 20-6 in the set they eventually won 25-10.
Rawa and
Alexa Cassel (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) directed the offense with 14 assists and 12 assists respectively. Rawa and Fitzpatrick each had three aces on the night.
Ali Yordy (Fairfield, PA/Fairfield Area) led the Colonels defense with 11 digs over the first two sets and
Emily Gentzel (Yaphank, NY/Bellport) added a career high nine digs in the third set from the libero position. Fitzpatrick and Reedy each had two blocks.
Adrianna Derrick led the Giants with five kills and two blocks while Madi Aston had nine assists. Cassidy Fredo and Haley Wittenberg each had six digs to lead Keystone.
Wilkes will host John Jay College and Montclair State University in a tri-match on Saturday at the Marts Center. The Colonels are set to face John Jay at 11:00 a.m. and Montclair State at 3:00 p.m.
