Horwedel's Tally Leads Wilkes Men's Soccer over Scranton

Matthew Horwedel's (Delanson, NY/Schalmont Senior) 56
th minute goal led the Wilkes University men's soccer team past the University of Scranton by a 1-0 final at Bruggeworth Field in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.
The Colonels improved to 7-2-0 with the victory.
Wilkes controlled possession through most of the first half, notching five shot attempts to the Royals' one, but Scranton began chipping away with chances late in the initial 45'.
The Royals came inches from taking the lead in the 47
th minute when a shot hit the post.
Wilkes was awarded a penalty kick taken by Horwedel when Scranton was assessed a yellow card in the box. Although Royals' goalkeeper Jake Hodlofski, Horwedel picked up the rebound and placed in the lower left corner of the net for the matches only tally.
Both sides applied pressure over the remainder of the contest, however, the Colonels had the closest opportunity in the 82
nd minute when a shot from
Lucas Mueller (Dusseldorf, Germany/Quirinus- Gynasium) beat the keeper, but a Scranton defender stopped the shot.
Zach Tone (Easton, PA/Easton Area) earned the shutout win, stopping five shots.
Wilkes outshout the Royals 12-9.
The Colonels return to action on Saturday when they will host FDU-Florham for a 3:00 p.m. Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) game. Prior to the game, Wilkes will honor its seniors with a pre-game ceremony.
