Fourth Quarter Sinks Wilkes Women's Basketball at King's
WILKES-BARRE – A fourth quarter in which the Wilkes University women's basketball team was outscored 23-9 proved to be the difference as it fell to King's College 58-47 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play on Wednesday evening.
The Colonels are now 3-5 in league play and 4-10 overall.
Julia Marino (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Township) got the first bucket of the game slashing down the lane to give Wilkes the early 2-0 lead.
After King's hit a three to take a 7-6 lead,
Julianna Askins (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) hit a corner three-pointer to make the score 9-7 with 3:33 on the first-quarter clock. Wilkes finished the first quarter holding a 12-9 advantage.
The Monarchs started the second quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 16-12 lead before layups from
Erin Shober (Reading, PA/Wilson) and Marino tied the score with just under six minutes left in the first half.
The Colonels finished the second quarter on a 7-0 run, entering halftime with a 24-23 advantage.
Wilkes started the second half on a 7-0 run with good jumpers from
Kendra Smith (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) and
Brianna Horton (Verona, NJ/Verona) and a three-pointer from Smith leading King's to a 30-second timeout with 8:13 on the clock.
King's climbed back through the second half of the quarter as the end of the third quarter saw the Colonels holding a 38-35 lead.
With the score tied at 41 and 7:18 on the clock, the Monarch's went on a 12-2 run to take a 53-43 lead with just over two minutes left on the clock.
Wilkes was unable to erase the deficit as the final horn sounded.
The Colonels were led by Marino, who finished with 16 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Horton and Smith both added nine points with Smith contributing a game-high 10 rebounds.
Samantha Rajza had a game-high 20 points for the Monarchs with three assists. Emily Morano had 10 points and seven rebounds to round out the double-digit scorers.
Wilkes returns to the court on Saturday when it will host FDU-Florham for a 1:00 p.m. MAC Freedom game at the Marts Center.
