Horwedel Scores Late to Lead Wilkes Men's Soccer 1-0 over King's

WILKES-BARRE, PA – Matthew Horwedel's (Delanson, NY/Schalmont Senior) 84th minute goal lifted the Wilkes University men's soccer team to a 1-0 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) victory at cross-town rival King's College Tuesday night.

With the victory Wilkes improved to 2-2-0 in the conference and to 5-7-1 overall. King's fell to 0-3-0 in MAC Freedom games and to 4-8-2 overall.

The Monarchs had the first three shots in the game before the Colonels first attempt at goal came in the 22nd minute. Seth Marsteller (Coplay, PA/Whitehall) and Colin Schulmeister (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) both had shots for Wilkes that were saved by King's goalkeeper Jake Forst in the 30th and 32nd minute respectively.

Nick Kinzler (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) made his second save of the game in the 39th minute to keep the game scoreless. Will Wagstaff (Allentown, PA/Parkland) had the final opportunity of the first half as his shot at the horn was saved by Forst. Shots were even for each team with six each in the first 45 minutes.

Nicholas Surgent (Wall. NJ/Wall) had the first shot on goal in the second half as he was stopped by Forst in the 55th minute. Forst stopped another shot by Schulmeister in the 69th minute and another by Surgent in the 75th before Horwedel finally solved the Monarchs goalkeeper with his shot at the 83:34 mark to give Wilkes the 1-0 lead.

Kinzler made his final save to preserve the victory less than a minute after the Colonels goal.

Wilkes outshot King's 9-2 in the second half and 15-8 for the game while holding an 8-3 lead in shots on goal. King's earned four corner kicks compared to two for Wilkes.

Kinzler earned the win and second shutout of the season with three saves. Forst made seven saves for King's.

The Colonels continue MAC Freedom play on the road at Delaware Valley University on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Doylestown, Pa.
