Late Goal Sends FDU-Florham Over Wilkes Men's Soccer 2-1
MADISON, NJ – Drilon Toska notched the game-winning goal with just over ten minutes left to play breaking open a 1-1 tie as host FDU-Florham escaped with a 2-1 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory over the Wilkes University men's soccer team Tuesday night at Robert T. Shields Field.
Wilkes dropped to 7-9-1 overall and 4-3 in MAC Freedom matches falling to sole possession of fifth place in the conference standings with one match remaining. FDU-Florham improved to 9-3-4 overall and 4-1-2 in league matches jumping ahead into sole possession of fourth place in the standings.
The Devils struck first as David Ciach scored his first goal of the season thanks to a helper from Mateo Ladino just before the first half ended at 44:23.
Wilkes responded later in the second half when
Xavier Guerreiro (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) notched his second tally of the season thanks to an assist from
Matthew Meagher (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) tying the game at 1-1 with just under 18 minutes remaining.
Toska then clinched the match for the Devils scoring off an assist from Oliver Trujillo eight minutes later, his eighth goal of the season.
FDU-Florham held a 19-12 shot advantage while Wilkes garnered eight corner kick attempts to the Devils five.
Nick Kinzler (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) played all 90 minutes in net for Wilkes finishing with seven saves in the defeat. Tiernan Grey made five stops to record the win for the Devils in goal.
Wilkes concludes its regular season Saturday hosting Arcadia University at 3:30 p.m. at Bruggeworth Field on Senior Day. The match also has major postseason implications.
