Late Lopez Goal Helps Wilkes Women’s Soccer Tie with Arcadia

Late Lopez Goal Helps Wilkes Women's Soccer Tie with Arcadia

EDWARDSVILLE – Kayla Lopez (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) scored a goal in the 88th minute to help Wilkes University women's soccer team finish their regular season matchup in a tie with Arcadia University in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action on Saturday afternoon at Bruggeworth Field.

Wilkes ends their season with a 4-11-3 record and concluded their MAC Freedom competition at 1-5-2. Arcadia will go to 7-9-3 in the regular season and 3-4-1 in conference action.

The game started off with the Knights getting a quick goal in the second minute, hitting a shot from the left side that arced enough to get into the goal for Arcadia. Wilkes was unable to keep up with Arcadia's attack, being outshot in the first half 9-4 as the score would remain the same to the second.

In the second half, Wilkes began to get their footing down, taking nine shots in the half, compared to the eight Arcadia had. Hannah Hart (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert), Kailee Harwick (Souderton, PA/Souderton), and Erica Feese (State College, PA/State College Area) all had opportunities to get the tying score but would either be denied by Abigail Fuchs or be too far from the goal. Lopez would get that score as she would take a Jedlicka pass and hit the top of the net to tie the game with under three minutes left to go.

Arcadia would try to break the tie as a foul inside the penalty box would give Caroline Weirich an attempt to retake the lead for the Knights. Hannah Landis (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen) would make the biggest save of the game as she dove left and stopped the ball in its tracks. Feese would try one more shot near the end but would go out of bounds, resulting in the game finishing in a tie.

Lopez would finish with the only goal on the day while Jedlicka had the assist. Feese and Harwick ended the day with four and three shots respectively. Landis finished with seven saves.
