Wilkes Women's Volleyball Finishes Season with Senior Day Sweep

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over visiting Rutgers University-Newark on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at the Marts Center to close out the 2022 season. Wilkes won the sets 25-21, 25-13, 25-16.

Wilkes finished the year with an 8-20 overall record following the win. Rutgers-Newark dropped to 1-18 overall.

The Colonels recognized their five seniors as they all played the entirety of the match. Olivia Marsh (East Hampton, CT/East Hampton) finished with career highs of 20 assists, nine digs, four aces, and three kills. Kelsey Carroll (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) had a season high 10 kills and added eight digs. Emily Lass (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) had a career high 11 digs. Jessica Salus (Shavertown, PA/Lake Lehman) finished with career highs with seven digs, four blocks, and four aces. Allison Murie (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) finished with five kills on the afternoon.

Sophomore Jenna Baron (Nanticoke, PA/Greater Nanticoke Area) had a career high eight kills and three blocks and first year Casey McNally (Hegins, PA/Tri-Valley) had a career high 14 digs.

The Colonels battled to a 22-16 lead in the first set following an ace by Murie. The Scarlet Raiders then closed the score to 22-21 but a Carroll kill, Rutgers-Newark attack error and an ace by Marsh handed Wilkes the 25-21 victory.

Wilkes took the lead for good in the second set at 11-10 and never looked back as the home side scored 14 of the final 17 points in the set to go ahead 2-0. Marsh went on a service run that extended the Wilkes lead from 15-12 to 24-12. Salus and Carroll had two kills each during the run. Baron put away the final point with a kill to win the set 25-13.

Wilkes broke open the third set with a six-point run to take a 16-10 lead. Baron had two kills and combined for a block with Salus during the run. Wilkes would pull away a bit more the rest of the way to win the third set 25-16 and sweep the match.
