No. 11 Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Falls in OT Against King's to Open UCHC Play

WILKES-BARRE – Aaron Frenkel scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift visiting King's College to a 3-2 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over No.11 Wilkes University Sunday afternoon at the Toyota SportsPlex.

Wilkes dropped to 0-1-1 overall and 0-1-0 in UCHC play following the home defeat. King's improved to 1-1-0 and 1-0-0 in league play. It also marked the first time King's has won in the series.

Nick Godfrey (Cedar Run, NJ) opened with Wilkes' best chance early in the first period when he took a pass down the left side and went into goal all alone only to be stopped by King's goalie Ismael Ralsten with 13:43 on the clock.

Late in the first period the Colonels looked to have scored when Cole Jungwirth (Bloomington, MN) toe dragged around a Monarch defender and into goal, but the shot was stopped by another defender behind the goalie keeping the game scoreless. Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI) had one last chance for Wilkes with under two minutes in the period but a wrist shot hit the opposite post and bounced behind the goalie as the game remained scoreless after one.

Both teams began the second period with penalties as King's went on a 4-on-3 power-play with 17:02 on the clock. After winning the ensuing faceoff, Jack Cooper redirected a shot into the back of the net to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.

Wilkes finally broke through midway through the second frame as Joey Johnson entered the zone on a delay and took a pass from Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI) before ripping a shot past the Monarch goalie tying the game at one with 8:29 left in the period.

King's responded with 2:10 left in the second as Cooper deposited his second goal of the game taking a 50-50 puck down the middle of the ice and beating Colonel goalie Garrett Nieto (Yorba Linda, CA) five-hole to give the Monarchs a 2-1 advantage after two.

Wilkes wasted little time knotting the game up for a second time as an Erickson shot rebounded off the goalie and onto the stick of Cam Lowe (Lancaster, MA) where the first-year found the back of the empty net with 16:20 left in the third period.

With back-to-back power plays Wilkes looked to complete the comeback midway through the final frame. Nick Godfrey (Cedar Run, NJ) had the best opportunity on the man-advantage but his one-timer was robbed by Ralsten's glove with 6:15 left in regulation keeping the game tied at two.

The teams would go into the extra five minute overtime with both holding for quality scoring chances. King's would eventually break though with the game-winner with 1:32 left in overtime when Frenkel pushed one through.

Nieto finished with 21 saves in the loss. Ralsten made 35 saves, none bigger than on the Godfrey shot, to earn the victory.

Wilkes remains idle until Saturday when the Colonels host Albertus Magnus College at 5:00 p.m. at the Toyota SportsPlex in the start of a home-and-home series.
