Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Drops Matchup to No. 6 Oswego State
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team dropped its matchup against No. 6 Oswego State by a 5-1 score at the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational at the Saratoga Springs City Rink Saturday evening.
With the loss the Colonels will face Rivier University at 1:00 p.m. Sunday in the third-place game. Rivier was a 5-3 loser to host Skidmore College on Saturday.
Wilkes now stands at 2-6-1 overall on the season while nationally ranked Oswego State improved to 7-1-0.
The Lakers started the scoring 1:15 into the first period with a shorthanded goal and added the second goal on the power play at the 8:55 mark of the first.
Matt Carlson (Delmar, NY) put the Colonels on the board 14:36 into the first with the first year's third goal of the season as
Cole Jungwirth (Bloomington, MN) and
Christian Blomquist (Wauwatosa, WI) assisted. It was the first career point for Blomquist.
Oswego added goals at the 2:24 and 9:51 marks of the second at 12:47 of the third for the 5-1 win.
The Colonels went 0-for-7 on the power play in the game with Oswego going 1-for-3. The Lakers held a 38-35 lead in shots on goal while Wilkes led 38-25 at the faceoff circle.
Billy Berry (Redding, CT) won 13-of-19 faceoffs to lead the way for Wilkes and
Max Cocchi (Ludlow, MA) was 10-for-15 at the dot. Blomquist led Wilkes with four shots on goal.
Alex DiCarlo scored two goals for the Lakers and Ryan Dickinson added a goal and an assist.
Garrett Nieto (Yorba Linda, CA) made 33 saves between the pipes for Wilkes. Cal Schell stopped 34 shots in the win for Oswego.
