Wilkes Men’s Ice Hockey Unable to Keep Up With Fast-Paced Albertus Magnus Offense

Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Falls 5-1 to Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Wilkes University men's ice hockey would score in the third period but were not able to keep up with the Falcons offensive attack as the Colonels would fall to Albertus Magnus College 5-1 in non-conference action on Sunday night at the Ralph Walker Skating Rink.

Wilkes, who is receiving votes in the USCHO.com Division III Men's Ice Hockey Poll, falls to 1-2-1 on the year while Albertus Magnus College improves to 2-2-0 this season.

The game would start off even, with both teams holding down shots for the first eight minutes. The Falcons would strike first at the 8:59 mark to go up 1-0. Albertus Magnus would then get their second goal in the first period on a power play as they would take a 2-0 and go into the second period with that score.

The second period would see Albertus Magnus continue their play, scoring at the 7:15 and 13:36 mark to go up 4-0 over the Colonels. Wilkes had Cole Jungwirth (Bloomington, MN), Jimmy O'Kane (Chicago, IL/Notre Dame Prep), Cam Lowe (Lancaster, MA)Scott Mueller (Nashville, TN), Ryan Galvin (Atlanta, GA), and Mason Vonk (West Olive, MI) all take shots in the period that were unable to hit their mark, as the Falcons would keep the lead to the end of the second period.

Albertus Magnus would cap off their night with a goal on a power play at the 9:07 mark to extend the Falcons lead to 5-1. Matt Carlson (Delmar, NY) would find the back of the net on a power play with 1:14 left in the game as Steven Spetz (Oak Ridge, NJ) and Scott Mueller (Nashville, TN) assisted him to get Wilkes on the board and make the score 5-1. The Falcons would let the rest of the clock run down and hold onto that lead to end the game. Jack Perna (Sykesville, MD) had 26 saves on the night for the Colonels.

Wilkes will return home to face a weekend matchup between Manhattanville College, where they will compete in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action on Saturday at Toyota SportsPlex at 7:30 p.m.
