Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Suffers Overtime Loss at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, PA – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team went scoreless through regulation before eventually falling 1-0 in overtime to Chatham University at The Hunt Armory Friday afternoon in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) game.

Wilkes fell to 3-7-1 overall with the loss and to 1-5-0 in UCHC action with four points. Chatham improved its record to 4-3-1 overall and to 4-2-0 in the league with 11 points following the home victory.

Andrew Warhoftig scored the game-winner on a power play that bled over into the extra five-minute session as the Colonels were called for a slashing penalty with 34 seconds left in the third period. Warhoftig's goal came 59 seconds into overtime with assists from Caden Smith and Nick Cyprian. The Cougars earned two UCHC points with the overtime victory while the Colonels had to settle for one conference point in the contest.

Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY) stopped all 30 of the shots he faced over the first three periods including 14 in the first period. The senior made 31 saves in the game for Wilkes. Ricardo Gonzalez earned the shutout with 27 saves for Chatham.

Matt Carlson (Delmar, NY) and Joe Johnson (Midland, MI) paced the Colonels with four shots each while Jimmy O'Kane (Chicago, IL/Notre Dame Prep), Nick Swain (Jackson, NJ), and Ryan Galvin (Atlanta, GA) added three each.

Chatham won the faceoff battle 34-29. O'Kane went 10-for-17 and Max Cocchi (Ludlow, MA) 5-for-9 to finish above 50 percent for the Colonels. Chatham outshot the Colonels 32-27 for the game including 14-7 in the first period. Wilkes held the shots advantage in the second and third periods before Chatham had the only two shots over overtime.

The Colonels were 0-for-2 on the power play as the Cougars capitalized on the fifth Wilkes penalty to finally break the tie.

Wilkes and Chatham return to the ice tomorrow at The Hunt Armory to finish the season series at 12:00 p.m.
