Late Comeback Falls Short for Wilkes Men's Basketball at Delaware Valley
DOYLESTOWN, PA – The Wilkes University Colonels men's basketball team traveled to face the Delaware Valley Aggies in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom battle Saturday afternoon.
The Colonels (7-15, 4-10 MACF) fell 69-66 in a comeback effort that just fell short against the Aggies (13-9, 9-6)
The Aggies roared out to an early lead with a 6-0 run propelling them to a 12-5 edge. The Colonels found themselves down by as many as 15 points to Delaware Valley at multiple points during the half, but the Colonels took advantage of the paint to form a 13-4 run to close within 34-29 with 3:56 left in the half and went into the locker room down 37-31.
A quick 5-0 run to start the second put Delaware Valley up by double digits once more, forcing the Colonels to battle back. A 12-3 run in the middle of the half gave the Colonels their first tie at 55 all, but the Aggies pieced together another big run to put themselves up 66-56 with 2:56 to go. Nickerson DeMelfi (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park) three-pointer with nine seconds left put them at striking distance after a pair of free throws. A three-pointer fell short in the final seconds for the Colonels as Delaware Valley took the home victory.
Sophomore
Trent Fisher (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) finished with yet another double-double, scoring 20 points and bringing down 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double in seven games. He also led the team with four steals, three blocks, and tied for the team lead with three assists. Sophomore
Matthew Davidheiser (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) was the other double-digit scoring Colonel, earning 11 points. Three Aggies finished in double figures, with Pernell Ghee leading the way with 18 points.
The Colonels return home one last time this regular season to battle with crosstown rival King's. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Tuesday in a series the Colonels lead 12-9 in the live stats era. The Navy and Gold won at King's earlier this season 88-70.
