Career Highs Push Wilkes Men's Volleyball to Road Sweep
JAMAICA, N.Y. – The Wilkes University Colonels traveled to face the York Cardinals Tuesday night for a non-conference affair.
The Colonels (5-6) found easy sledding against the Cardinals (0-2), winning 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-12) in straight sets.
The Navy and Gold never trailed in the entire match. A 10-2 run in the middle of the first set by the Colonels effectively put the set out of reach for York as Wilkes led 15-5 on their way to a 25-11 victory. The Cardinals hung tough in the early goings of the second set, keeping pace with Wilkes at eight all in the opening serves. An 8-1 run put the set firmly in the Colonels hands at 16-9. York cut the lead down to 19-15 with a 6-3 rally, but the Colonels put the second set away with a 6-0 run. The Navy and Gold took a 3-0 lead in the last set and found a 7-1 run to take a 13-5 advantage. Wilkes finished the set and match strong with a 7-1 run to take home a clean sweep.
The Colonels won most significant statistical battles in the matchup, including winning the aces battle 13-1 and recording 33 kills to York's 12. Sophomore
Paul Binner (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) led both teams with 10 kills, while sophomore
Noah Taylor (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) tacked on nine of his own. Binner's 10 kills and his nine assists were also both career highs for the sophomore. First year
Jacob Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) posted a career-high four aces, while junior
Casey Shipman (Hershey, PA/Hershey) ran the Colonels offense with 18 assists, his season high. First year
Cody Smith (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area) recorded a career-high six kills as well.
The Colonels men's volleyball team returns to the Marts Center Thursday night for a 7:00 p.m. first serve against PSU-Altoona. The Colonels look for their first-ever win over PSU-Altoona in program history.
