Wilkes Baseball Uses 11-Run Ninth to Complete Comeback over Drew

FORT PIERCE, FL – The Wilkes University baseball team trailed 5-0 entering the ninth inning but scored 11 times to complete the comeback victory over Drew University on their Spring Break Trip Monday afternoon.

The Colonels won 11-5 to improve to 6-0 for the first time since the 2013 season. Drew dropped to 1-5 overall.

The Rangers scored two runs in the third, one in the fifth, one in the sixth, and one in the seventh to take a 5-0 lead.

With the Colonels down to their final three outs, the bats came alive. Michael Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery), who reached 100 career hits with his first hit of the game, started the inning by reaching base. After a pop out, Nick Pronti (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Wood-Ridge) reached to put two runners on. Darren Kerdesky (Dallas, PA/Dallas) then hit an RBI single to right to bring in Patrizio. After two wild pitches, Pronti would come in to score to make it 5-2.

Brandon Reno (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area) then walked and Connor Morgan (Dallas, PA/Lake Lehman) pinch ran for him as the Rangers starter exited the game after 8.1 innings. AJ Brosious (Laurys Station, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) then walked and Zack Luksic (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) drove in Kerdesky with a hit. After a line out, Morgan scored on a passed ball as Wilkes trailed 5-4.

Mike Show (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) then put the Colonels ahead with a two RBI single to left that scored Brosious and Luksic. A Patrizio single would plate Show and chase another pitcher from the game. Dominick Bayo (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) then walked and Pronti singled to load the bases again. Kerdesky then was hit by a pitch that forced in Patrizio. Chase Vrabel (Gibsonia, PA/Pine Richland) then pinch hit and knocked a three-run double that scored Bayo, Pronti, and Kerdesky to make the score 11-5 and put Drew onto its fourth pitcher of the inning who recorded the final out. Wilkes sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning.

Show then moved from right field to the mound to pitch the bottom of the ninth to seal the game. Gage Coudriet (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) started for Wilkes and went the first 5.0 innings, allowing four hits, three runs (two earned), with no walks and one strikeout. Jack Gordon (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) (1-0) pitched the next three innings, allowing three hits, two runs (one earned), with three walks and three strikeouts to earn the win.

Patrizio went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Wilkes. Kerdesky was 2-for-4 with two RBI's and Vrabel had a team-high three RBI's with his one hit.

Wilkes continues its Spring Break Trip in Florida with a nine-inning game against Gettysburg College at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow.
