Wilkes Baseball Drops Non-Conference Game to Scranton
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University baseball team lost 22-4 to the University of Scranton Wednesday in non-conference action at Bruggeworth Field.
Wilkes dropped to 15-13 overall with the loss while Scranton improved to 19-5-1.
Wilkes took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as
Zack Luksic (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) drove in
Michael Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) and
Dominick Bayo (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West), who each singled, with a two-run single up the middle.
The Royals would take the lead with four runs in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third the Colonels tied the game.
AJ Brosious (Laurys Station, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) scored on a throwing error by the third baseman after he had reached on a walk.
Nick Pronti (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Wood-Ridge), who doubled, later scored on a double play groundout to tie the game 4-4.
Scranton scored the final 18 runs to win 22-4.
Tegan Shortlidge (Berwick, PA/Berwick) (2-2) suffered the loss as he started and pitched 4.2 innings, allowing 10 runs (five earned) on 11 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Jack Gordon (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee),
Connor Morgan (Dallas, PA/Lake Lehman), and
Rob Iacono (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) combined to pitch the final 4.1 innings.
Luksic (2-for-3, two RBI's),
Chase Vrabel (Gibsonia, PA/Pine Richland) (2-for-3), and Patrizio (2-for-4) each had multi-hit games for the Colonels who finished the game with 13 hits.
Adam Grundt (Archbald, PA/Valley View) recorded his first career hit as a pinch hitter in the ninth.
Jimmy Murray (2-0) earned the win as he took over for the Royals starter who went four innings. Tyler Kirsten was the star for Scranton at the plate, going 3-for-5 with six RBI's.
Wilkes returns to the field Friday, hosting Stevens Institute of Technology at Bruggeworth Field. The Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom game will begin at 1:00 p.m. The Ducks are receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll.
