Wilkes Men's Volleyball Swept in MAC Tri-Match
STEVENSON, MD. – The Wilkes University Colonels traveled to face the Stevenson Mustangs and Eastern Eagles to conclude their Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) and regular season slate Saturday afternoon.
The Colonels (9-22, 1-12 MAC) were swept 3-0 by both the Eagles (8-13, 4-9) and #11 Mustangs (19-9, 8-3) on the afternoon.
The Navy and Gold hung tough with the Eagles early, but a 6-1 run gave Eastern a 18-12 lead in set one. A 9-3 Colonel run forced extra points and tied the two up at 24 all, but the Eagles found two points to take a 26-24 victory. The Colonels took a 9-5 lead in the second set, but an 8-3 Eagle run gave Eastern a 13-12 lead. The two would be locked in a tight set until the Eagles found a 7-3 run to close out the Colonels in set two. The third set was filled with back-and-forth points until a 7-2 run gave the Eagles a 16-12 lead, then a 7-1 run gave the Colonels back a 17-16 edge. A 9-4 Eagle run shut the Colonels out of the set and match in 3-0 (24-26, 21-25, 21-25) fashion.
Ethan Speicher (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) led the squad with seven blocks, while
Paul Binner (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) recorded 19 assists to lead the team.
Lucas Mages (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois Central) had a team-leading nine kills, while Foster Lobb had 18 kills for Eastern and Chris Miller 36 assists. Binner's 19 assists was his career high, while Speicher set his season high and tied his career high with his seven blocks.
The Colonels were swept by Stevenson, ranked 11 in the national men's volleyball poll, 11-25, 11-25, 16-25. Stevenson outhit the Colonels .368 to .000 and had seven aces to the Colonels none, as well as nine blocks to the Colonels three.
With the losses the Colonels wrapped up their 2022 men's volleyball season.
