Wilkes Softball Falls in Extra-Inning Heartbreaker against Misericordia, Drops Home Doubleheader

EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University Colonels hosted the Misericordia Cougars at the Ralston Athletic Complex Wednesday evening for a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom doubleheader.

The Colonels (12-14, 1-11 MACF) dropped game one in five innings by an 8-0 margin, before losing 2-1 in an eight-inning pitcher's duel.  The Cougars six-run second inning in game one propelled them forward to a decisive victory, but game two proved to be a different story.  Misericordia struck first in the first with a single through the right side, but the Colonels tied it up with a Jessie Smith (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) triple to right field in the third.

Neither team would budge until extra innings, with Rhia Aurand (Avondale, PA/Avon Grove) tallying a complete-game eight strikeout affair while Miranda Bohn had seven strikeouts in seven innings.  The Colonels had baserunning issues in the extra frame that cost them a runner in scoring position.  The Cougars took advantage, a single to right field proving to be the decisive factor in the top of the eighth.

Erin Cabry (York, PA/Central York) hit four of six between both games, while Smith tallied the lone RBI for the Colonels.  Bohn had four RBIs between the two games on top of her seven-inning outing in game two, while Alexa McHugh threw 10 strikeouts in five innings in game one.

The Navy and Gold hit the road one last time in their 2022 slate to face Delaware Valley in Doylestown, Pa. on Saturday for a doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in a series the Aggies lead 10-9 in the live stats era, though the Colonels swept the last time the two met in 2019.
