Dominant Pitching and Timely Runs Lead Wilkes Baseball to Sweep of Delaware Valley

EDWARDSVILLE – Game one starter Tony Molitoris (Hanover Twp., PA/Holy Redeemer) and game two starter Gage Coudriet (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) turned out dominant performances for the Wilkes University baseball team as the Colonels walked-off in extra innings of game one, 2-1, and won game two 2-0 over visiting Delaware Valley University at Bruggeworth Field Saturday to complete a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) series sweep. Dominick Bayo (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) had the key hit in game two.

Wilkes improved to 7-11 in the conference and to 20-15 overall with the pair of victories. Delaware Valley slipped to 12-20 overall and to 3-15 in the MAC Freedom.

Molitoris (3-2) earned the complete game victory in game one as the senior went all 9.0 innings, allowing just one run (zero earned) on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

The Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first following a single and two groundouts that moved the runner up before a passed ball provided the run.

Wilkes tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when AJ Brosious (Laurys Station, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) led off with a triple down the right field line. Zack Luksic (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) singled home Brosious with one out to tie the game.

The Colonels threatened in the seventh and eighth innings but were unable to find the winning run until they broke through in the ninth.

Jason Spezzaferra (Maywood, NJ/Hackensack) led off with a single and moved to second on a bunt single by Michael Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery). Peyton Schuck (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) moved both runners ahead with a sacrifice bunt before Brandon Reno (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area) was intentionally walked to load the bases. The Aggies elected to use five infielders with one out. Brosious hit the ball to the right fielder playing between first and second but his throw home was wide and pulled the catcher's foot off the plate allowing Spezzaferra to slide in safely for the winning run.

Reno was the lone Colonel with two hits in game one as he went 2-for-4. Patrizio stole one base to tie him for the program record with 92 career steals.

Bayo provided the only runs of game two as he hit a two-run single to left center in the bottom of the fourth. Max Alessi (Wallenpaupack, PA/Wallenpaupack), who had singled to lead off the inning, and Chase Vrabel (Gibsonia, PA/Pine Richland), who was hit by a pitch with one out, came into score after moving to second and third on a Patrizio single.

Coudriet (5-0) nearly earned the complete game shutout, finishing with 6.2 innings pitched without allowing a run on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Sawyer Kemp (Nescopeck, PA/Berwick) nailed down his seventh save of the season with one pitch as he got the final out via a groundout to Nick Pronti (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Wood-Ridge) at shortstop with runners on second and third.

Wilkes returns to action Tuesday in Cortland, N.Y. to face nationally ranked SUNY Cortland at 3:30 p.m.
