Wilkes Baseball Falls Twice at Home to DeSales
EDWARDSVILLE – On a rainy Saturday at Bruggeworth Field visiting DeSales University swept a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) doubleheader from the Wilkes University baseball team. The Bulldogs took game one 8-1 and game two 6-3.
Wilkes is now 2-9 in MAC Freedom games and 14-11 overall. DeSales improved to 7-4 in the conference and to 13-9 overall.
DeSales scored one run in the top of the first in game one and the Colonels answered in the bottom of the inning with one run as well.
Michael Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) tripled over the right fielder's head to lead off the inning. With the bases loaded and two outs,
AJ Brosious (Laurys Station, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) walked to bring Patrizio across the plate.
The Bulldogs took the lead with a run in the fourth inning and added two more in the fifth to make it 4-1. DeSales would take on three more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to earn the 8-1 victory.
JT Hibschman (Millville, NJ/Millville) (2-2) went five innings, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks with five strikeouts.
Todd Kolbicka (Hanover, PA/Hanover) pitched the final two innings for the Colonels.
Ryan Rieber (3-2) earned the win for DeSales, pitching five innings and allowing just one run on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
In game two the Bulldogs scored twice in the top of the first, but Wilkes would tie the game in the bottom of the inning with two runs on four hits. Patrizio led off with a single and stole second. He then scored on a double by
Brandon Reno (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area).
Sean Granahan (Pottstown, PA/Wilson West Lawn) then singled to move Reno to third and then Reno scored on a
Zack Luksic (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) single up the middle.
The Colonels took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the second at 3-2.
Peyton Schuck (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy) reached on a catcher's interference to start the inning. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Jason Spezzaferra (Maywood, NJ/Hackensack). Patrizio was then hit by a pitch and then was out at second when
Chase Vrabel (Gibsonia, PA/Pine Richland) reached on a fielder's choice that moved Schuck to third. Reno then singled to left to bring home Schuck.
The Wilkes lead held until the fifth when DeSales tied the game with a run on three hits. Billy Scanlon then broke the tie with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to make it 6-3.
Tony Molitoris (Hanover Twp., PA/Holy Redeemer) started and went the first 4.1 innings for the Colonels. He allowed three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
Sawyer Kemp (Nescopeck, PA/Berwick) (1-1) pitched the final 2.2 innings allowing three runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
Ian Kacergis (5-0) pitched all seven innings for DeSales. He allowed three runs (two earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts.
Patrizio, Reno and Granahan all had two hits in game two for the Colonels.
Wilkes will finish its series with DeSales with the single nine-inning game tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in Center Valley, Pa.
