Wilkes Women’s Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Hunter

Wilkes Women's Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Hunter 

KINGSTON, PA - The Wilkes University women's volleyball team lost 3-0 to Hunter College on Friday afternoon at the Jewish Community Center in Kingston, Pennsylvania. Wilkes lost in straight sets by scores of 20-25, 21-25 and 15-25. 

Wilkes falls to 1-1 on the season following that loss, while Hunter improves to 1-0. 

The Colonels kept it competitive in the first set with a 5-5 score before Hunter went on a 12-2 run. Wilkes fought back to make the score 23-18 behind Alexis Reedy (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra Area) and Alexa Cassel (Mount Joy, PA/Lower Dauphin) kills. Hunter would keep their lead near the end to take the first set 25-20. 

The second set would follow suit as Hunter got out early to a 9-4 lead before Nicole Fitzpatrick (New Hampton, NY/Minisink Valley) would record back-to-back serving aces to tie the game 9-9. The Colonels kept going back and forth, with Hope Ousey (Exton, PA/Henderson) recording a few kills and blocks to give the Wilkes a 17-16 lead. Hunter would once again go on a 9-4 run near the end to take the second set 25-21. 

Wilkes would go back and forth with Hunter to start the third set 6-5 behind blocks from Cassel and Allison Murie (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) in the early portion of the match. The Hawks would go on a 14-4 run to take the lead 19-10. Kills from Fitzpatrick and Ousey, along with two consecutive serving aces by Ali Yordy (Fairfield, PA/Fairfield Area) kept the Colonels in the third set 22-15. Hunter would pull off three straight points to finish the third set 25-15. 

Fitzpatrick led the Colonels with seven kills while Cassel handed out 22 assists in the three-set matchup. On the defensive side of the court, Yordy had 10 digs while Murie led the team with four blocks. 

Wilkes will open Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom competition as they head to Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
