Wilkes Women's Volleyball Unable to Pass Misericordia
DALLAS, PA – Wilkes University women's volleyball falls to Misericordia University 3-1 in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom match on Wednesday night.
Wilkes falls to 2-9, 0-3 in the MAC Freedom while Misericordia improves to 10-3, 2-1 in conference competition.
The first set was a back-and-forth contest for the Colonels and Cougars as it was tied at 10-10 with Nicole Fitzpatrick (New Hampton, NY/Minisink Valley) earning four kills in that stretch. Each team would go on a three-point stretch and keep the tie going to 21-21. Misericordia would eventually pull away, earning four of the last five points and taking the first set 25-21.
The second set saw the Cougars take an early lead 5-2 before the Colonels would earn the next six points behind Kelsey Carroll (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) and Hope Ousey (Exton, PA/Henderson) getting two kills each. Misericordia would get seven points in a row to take the lead 17-14 before the Colonels would retake the lead and keep the second set competitive with Fitzpatrick and Carroll kills. Wilkes would be up 23-22, where they would earn the last two points from a serving error and a Fitzpatrick kill to give the Colonels the second set 25-22.
The third set would see Misericordia take an early lead 5-3, with the next points going back-and-forth as Wilkes was down 8-6. The Cougars would go on an 8-1 run to go up 16-7. The Colonels would get kills from Jessica Salus (Shavertown, PA/Lake Lehman) and Allison Murie (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), along with Fitzpatrick, to cut down the lead 22-15. Misericordia would get three of the last five points and take the third set 25-17.
Wilkes began the fourth set by taking the first two points from an attack error and service ace by Ali Yordy (Fairfield, PA/Fairfield Area). The Cougars would take the next four points to take the lead. Each team would eventually trade points back-and-forth before Misericordia would get another four-point run and extend their lead 16-11. The Colonels would slowly comeback with service aces and kills from Carroll before earning five straight and eventually retaking the lead 22-21. Misericordia would stop the Colonels run, taking four of the last five points to earn a victory in the fourth set 25-23 and win the match 3-1.
Fitzpatrick would finish with a career-high 19 kills in this series, earning eight digs and a block as well. Carroll followed suit, finishing with eight kills while Ousey had five. Alexa Cassel (Mount Joy, PA/Lower Dauphin) recorded 35 assists, while tying with Murie in blocks, with three apiece. Emily Gentzel (Yaphank, NY/Bellport) led the team in digs with a career high 14, with Ali Yordy (Fairfield, PA/Fairfield Area) following behind with 11.
The Colonels continue their road stretch as they will go to Reading to participate in a tri-match as they play the host Albright College at 11:00 a.m. and Wilson College at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday in non-conference action.
