Wilkes Men's Soccer Drops 3-2 Battle with Scranton
SCRANTON, PA – The Wilkes University men's soccer team took an early lead and tied the match early in the second half before ultimately falling 3-2 at Weiss Field to host University of Scranton Tuesday night in non-conference action.
With the close loss Wilkes fell to 3-5-1 on the season while Scranton improved its record to 6-2-1 with the win.
Colin Schulmeister (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) scored his third goal of the season on the game's first shot in the fourth minute to get the Colonels off to a hot start.
Zach Tone (Easton, PA/Easton Area) followed with three consecutive saves in the seventh and eighth minutes before the Royals found the tying goal in the tenth minute from Ciaran Corr. Nick Addamo put Scranton ahead 2-1 in the 13th minute.
In the 32nd minute
Xavier Guerreiro (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) nearly tied the game with a shot that went off the crossbar. The sophomore then had a shot saved in the 41st minute as the first half ended with the Colonels trailing 2-1.
Matthew Horwedel (Delanson, NY/Schalmont Senior) tallied the tying goal for Wilkes in the 50th minute as he found the net for the fourth time this season.
Scranton had a quick answer once again as Dylan Estevez scored the game-winner in the 53rd minute.
In the 84th minute
Nick Kinzler (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) stopped a penalty kick by Anthony Rizzi to keep the Colonels hopes of finding the tying goal alive.
Vincent Ippolito (Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) had the final go at goal for Wilkes in the final moments but the shot was off target as the Royals preserved the 3-2 victory.
Tone made three first half saves for the Colonels while Kinzler stopped three shots in the second half. Charlie Smith made one save in the first half for Scranton while Ryan Lally earned the win for the Royals, playing the second half.
Scranton led 21-8 in total shots and 9-3 in shots on goal while also generating five corner kicks to the Colonels two. The physical game saw 17 fouls on Scranton and 14 on Wilkes.
The Colonels open Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play on Saturday against DeSales University for a Homecoming clash with the Bulldogs at Bruggeworth Field with game time set for 3:30 p.m.
