Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Drops Conference Matchup to Arcadia
COLMAR, PA – The Wilkes University women's ice hockey team would drop their second contest against Arcadia University as they would fall 4-1 in Saturday afternoon United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) action.
The Colonels would fall to 4-13-1 on the year, 4-10-1 in UCHC play, and 2-4-1 in MAC action. Arcadia would improve to 9-8-2 this season, 5-7-2 in UCHC competition, and 3-1-0 in MAC play.
The first period was a scoreless bout between the Colonels and Knights. Arcadia had 15 shots in the first period while holding Wilkes to only two. Emma Swansburg (Shelburne, NS) would save all 15 attempts that went in her way in the first half to keep the game scoreless as they went into the second period.
The second period was similar to the first, as neither team could make a break into the goal for the first 14 minutes of the game. Eventually, Karahkwenhawe White would take a shot that would be saved by Swansburg, but White had a second attempt that found the back end of the net to give Arcadia the lead 14:37 into the second period. Abigail Barcless (Hamilton, NJ) would make sure to tie the game up at 1-1 as she also took a shot that passed the Knights goalie 16:42 into the second. But the Knights would go into the break with the lead as Maeve Hourihan made her shot 23 seconds after the Colonels goal to retake the lead and head into the third period with a 2-1 lead.
Arcadia had 15 shots in the second period while their goalie Hannah Bergeron would make four saves.
The third period saw the Knights score 3:41 into the period as Izzy Gershtein would find the net to extend Arcadia's lead 3-1. The Colonels would try to get closer into the game, but another Knights goal at the 16:38 mark would seal the conference victory for the Knights.
Abigail Davis (Mountain Top, PA) led the team with three shots, while Barcless, Rachel Morey (Buffalo, WY/), and Abby Miller (Webster, NY/) had two apiece. Morey won 8-13 faceoffs, with Bella Kaczorowski (Anchorage, AK) going 7-16, and Elizabeth Spoon (Arlington, TX) finished with 2-10 in faceoffs. Swansburg had 40 saves, giving her a 90 save percentage on the day. Bergeron had 12 saves, giving her a save percentage of 92%.
The Colonels will return home for UCHC and MAC action as they host King's College on Tuesday, January 31 at 3:00 p.m. inside the Toyota SportsPlex.
