Wilkes Women's Volleyball Drops Landmark Contest to Moravian 3-1
WILKES-BARRE - The Wilkes University women's volleyball team lost a tough Landmark Conference matchup Tuesday night, as they fell against Moravian University 3-1 (15-25, 25-15. 25-21, 25-17) at the Marts Center.
The Greyhounds improve to 9-9 on the year with the victory and a 2-1 record in conference play, while the Colonels move to 7-12 overall and 0-3 in Landmark play.
The first set stayed even through the opening stages, the teams deadlocked at 6-6. Wilkes pulled away with a ten point run to open the set up to 16-6 led by three kills scored by
Nicole Fitzpatrick (New Hampton, NY/Minisink Valley). Moravian fought back with a strong run of their own, as they outscored the Colonels 8-2 and closed the gap to 18-14. Wilkes put the set away with a six point run and a dagger by
Alexis Reedy (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra Area) to take the set 25-15.
The Greyhounds opened the second set strong, pulling away to an 18-6 lead. Wilkes fought back with a 7-2 run to close set up to 20-13, but only managed two more points as Moravian took the second set 25-15 and evened the match at 1-1.
Both teams traded blows early in the third set, but the Colonels managed the early lead 7-5. Moravian took momentum with a seven point run to take a 12-7 lead. Play then shifted in favor of the Colonels as they evened up the score with a 7-2 run to even the game at 14 all, and stayed close over the next few points before a four point run put the Colonels in front 19-18. The Greyhounds, however, survived the heavy blows and made a 7-2 run to seal an incredibly close set 25-21.
Set four saw the Colonels take an early 5-1 lead, but Moravian closed in to make it a narrow 10-9 Colonel lead. The Greyhounds took their first lead of the set with a six point run to make the score 14-10. Wilkes fought back again to knot the game up at 15, but a seven point run saw Moravian run away with the final set, outscoring the Colonels 10-2 and taking the match victory 3-1.
Reedy led the Colonels with 14 kills, while
Alexa Cassel (Mount Joy, PA/Lower Dauphin) led in assists with 36.
Ali Yordy (Fairfield, PA/Fairfield Area) led the defensive effort with 18 digs.
Kelly Tempalsky led Moravian in kills with nine, while Ally Plitnick led in both assists and digs with 20 and 18 respectively.
The Colonels hit the court next on Friday, October 13 as they host the University of Scranton at 7:00 p.m.
