Wilkes Men's Swimming Earns Season-Opening Split Against Scranton and Moravian
WILKES-BARRE- The Wilkes University men's swimming team began the 2023-24 season splitting its home tri-meet with Landmark Conference opponents Moravian University and the University of Scranton on Saturday afternoon at the Wyoming Valley CYC. The Colonels defeated Moravian 134-26 but lost 228-33 to Scranton.

Sophomore
Ashton Dainty (Scranton, PA/Scranton) had the Colonels best individual race in the 50 Backstroke as he placed second of six swimmers with a time of 26.85.
The team of Dainty,
John Evans (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Holy Redeemer),
Stephen Verosko (Gainesville, VA/Patriot), and
Luke Donato (Westerly, RI/Westerly) started the day with the 200 Medley Relay. The team finished with a time of 1:50.90. It was the first collegiate race for Evans and Donato.
Mason McCoy (Essington, PA/Interboro) made his collegiate debut in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 2:08.63.
Ben Carro's (Berwick, PA/Berwick Area) first collegiate race was the 50 Backstroke where he finished with a time of 35.05.
Kirkland Matlock's (Carrollton, TX/Newman Smith) first collegiate race came in the 50 Freestyle as he completed the sprint in 28.97.
Donato had a strong finish of fifth out of 12 swimmers in the 100 Freestyle with a finishing time of 56.35.
The Colonels finished the day with the 200 Freestyle Relay as Dainty, Donato, Verosko, and Matlock finished with a time of 1:43.16.
Wilkes started the season with a 1-1 showing while Scranton went 2-0 and Moravian 0-2.
The Colonels are back in action next Saturday in Grantham, Pa. for a tri-meet with Messiah University and Mount Saint Mary College (NY) at 1:00 p.m.
