Wilkes Men's Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision to Landmark Leader Lycoming
WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The Wilkes University men's soccer team lost 1-0 to Landmark Conference leader Lycoming College at UPMC Field at Keiper Stadium Tuesday night.
Wilkes dropped to 1-4-2 in the Landmark Conference and 3-6-5 overall with the loss. Lycoming stayed unbeaten at 6-0-1 in the league and are now 9-3-4 overall.
The Colonels recorded the first scoring opportunity of the game when a
Herbert Ramirez (Highstown, NJ/Highstown) bid was saved by Nick Wilke.
Nick Kinzler (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) made his first save of the night on a chance by the Warriors in the sixth minute.
In the 10th minute
Andrew Slusser's (Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood Area) opportunity at goal went wide right of the frame of goal. Ramirez had the next shot in the 22nd minute but it was high.
The first corner of the contest was earned by Lycoming in the 27th minute. The Warriors followed with two shots that Kinzler was able to keep out of the net over the next minute of action. Kinzler made another save following a corner by Lycoming in the 32nd minute. Two final shot attempts by Lycoming went wide of goal in the final minutes of the half as the game entered the break scoreless.
Aidan Stillman broke the tie in the 53rd minute with an assist from Pius Atubire to make it 1-0 Lycoming.
Colin Schulmeister (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) responded with a shot but it was high following the Warriors goal. Kinzler stopped his first shot of the second half in the 58th minute.
Joseph Zisa (East Windsor, NJ/Highstown) had a shot that was off target for the Colonels in the 73rd minute.
Kinzler made another save to keep the deficit at just one goal but the Colonels were unable to generate scoring chances in the final minutes as Lycoming held on for the 1-0 win.
Lycoming led 12-5 in total shots and 7-1 in shots-on-goal. The Warriors had 10 corners kicks and did not allow one for the Colonels. Wilkes had 15 fouls and three yellow cards compared to eight fouls for Lycoming.
Kinzler made six saves on the night while Wilke earned the win with one for Lycoming.
The Colonels return to Bruggeworth Field Saturday to host Catholic University in Landmark Conference play at 1:00 p.m. for their second to last game of the regular season.
