Two Goals by Scott Elevates Wilkes Field Hockey Over Lycoming 2-0

WILLIAMSPORT –  A two-goal performance by Kellie Scott (Northport, ME/Kents Hill) and five saves by Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) paved the way to a crucial conference victory for the Wilkes University field hockey team as the Colonels took down Lycoming 2-0 at Keiper Stadium on Wednesday night.

The win put Wilkes back over the .500 mark on the season and improved their overall record to 8-7. The Colonels moved to 3-4 in conference play and currently are tied for fifth in the standings and hold possession of the sixth playoff spot. On the Lycoming side, the loss dropped the Warriors' record to 4-10 and 0-7 in the Landmark.

The Colonels jumped out of the gate strong by driving play down the field to Lycoming's goal crease. Their efforts were rewarded with an early penalty corner. On the ensuing play, a ball sent towards goal by Caitlin Keim (Trevorton, PA/Line Mountain) was deflected in front of the net, falling right into the lap of Scott. Scott tapped the ball into the open goal and gave Wilkes a 1-0 lead just 3:13 into the match.

Keim nearly added to the Colonels' lead just under two minutes later when she fired a shot just past the left goal post.

At 6:46 into the first quarter, the Warriors caught Wilkes in transition and forced a Colonel defender to commit a foul inside the shooting circle. This gave Lycoming their first penalty corner of the night, however the Wilkes goalkeeper Eidle bailed her teammates out with a pivotal save to maintain the 1-0 lead.

The relentless Wilkes offense were awarded a total of eight penalty corners in the first quarter alone. On the final attempt of the quarter, Scott launched a shot that beat the Warriors' goalkeeper Isabella Bobe to her right hand side. Scott's second marker of the night gave the Colonels a 2-0 lead at 13:22. They would carry the advantage heading into the first break.

Morgan Hermanofski (Shickshinny, PA/Northwest Area) found herself with a golden scoring opportunity at 19:45 when she dribbled through a pair of Warrior defenders, but was unable to lift the ball over the stacked pads of Bobe.

Eidle tacked on three more saves in the second quarter, including a positional save at 25:02 when she charged out of the goal to cut off the shooting angle of a Lycoming forward and make the stop. As the game reached the end of the first half, Wilkes held control of a 2-0 lead.

Neither team seemed to lose any steam coming out of the break as there were several dangerous chances on both sides of the field. Eidle continued to do her part in keeping Lycoming off the board by making a kick save at 39:54

As the game entered its final frame, Lycoming began to apply heavier pressure on the Colonels' defense. Wilkes managed to weather the storm thanks to several defensive breakups to keep the Warrior offense at bay. The clock struck zero and the Colonels took the game by a score of 2-0.

Scott led the way for Wilkes with two goals on as many shots. Bridget Rosenfeld (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) recorded five shots and Eidle posted her fifth shutout of the season.

Loghan Shelly led all Lycoming forwards with two shots, followed by Hallie Woodring, Katie Loughran and Carmen Hannon who all had a shot as well. Bobe made 8 saves on the night.

The Colonels play their final road game of the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Catholic University of America for a 12:00 p.m. battle with their Landmark Conference opponent.
