Balanced Attack Leads Wilkes Men's Basketball to 4-0 Start After 75-58 Win Against Marywood
WILKES-BARRE – Six players reached double figures as the Wilkes University men's basketball team moved to 4-0 on the season after cruising to a 75-58 non-conference victory over Marywood University Tuesday night at the Marts Center.
Wilkes remains unbeaten at 4-0 on the year while Marywood slipped to 4-3 overall on the season.
Marywood came out firing away, especially from long range as the Pacers connected on three three-pointers in the first ten minutes of play to take a 16-8 lead. Wilkes responded stepping up its defensive pressure which in turn led to easy points on offense as a
Jack Argento (Hershey, PA/Hershey) trey tied the game at 17 with 6:31 left in the first half.
From there it was a 15-0 run that allowed the Colonels to take control of the game as five points each from
Cayden Merrifield (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) and
Matthew Davidheiser (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) sparked the rally. Wilkes took a 32-22 lead at the break following five points to finish the half from Marywood.
Wilkes continued to score in the paint as
Trent Fisher (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) scoffed back-to-back buckets inside before five points from
Joey Zvorsky (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) forced a Marywood timeout giving the Colonels their largest lead of the contest up 45-24 with 15:57 remaining.
The Wilkes advantage continued over 20 points over the next 11 minutes of play before each team emptied its bench to play the remaining four minutes.
Merrifield and Zvorsky led Wilkes with 13 points each combining for 12 rebounds.
Lucas Lesko (Northampton, PA/Northampton) finished with 12 points and seven rebounds while Fisher added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Davidheiser (10) and Argento (11) rounded out the double figure scorers for the Colonels in a balanced attack offensively.
Trevor Seitz topped all Marywood players with nine points.
The Colonels remain idle through the Thanksgiving break before opening Landmark Conference play Wednesday, November 29 hosting the University of Scranton at the Marts Center.
